Description

This Beef Barbecue Sauce Poutine is a bold and savory twist on the classic Canadian comfort food. Crispy oven-baked fries are topped with gooey cheese curds and smothered in a smoky, tangy barbecue-style beef gravy made with lean ground beef. Perfect for cozy nights or indulgent weekends, this homemade poutine delivers big flavors and satisfying textures in every bite.

Ingredients

For the Oven Fries:

6 cups (1 kg) russet potatoes, cut into ½-inch thick wedges, skin on

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Beef Barbecue Sauce:

1 onion, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, finely chopped

1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef

2 tablespoons butter

¼ cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon paprika

2 cups beef broth

¼ cup ketchup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and black pepper, to taste

To Serve:

10 oz (280 g) cheese curds or shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Bake the Fries:

    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    • Toss potato wedges with oil, salt, and pepper. Arrange them skin-side down on the baking sheet.

    • Bake for 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

  • Make the Beef Barbecue Sauce:

    • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Add chopped onion, garlic, and ground beef.

    • Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until browned (about 10 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.

    • Stir in flour and paprika; cook for 1 minute.

    • Pour in beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and bring to a boil, then simmer for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

  • Assemble the Poutine:

    • Divide fries among plates or bowls. Top with cheese curds.

    • Ladle hot beef barbecue sauce over the fries and cheese so it melts.

    • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

Shortcut Tip: Use frozen store-bought fries to save time—just bake according to package directions.

Extra Flavor: Add a splash of maple syrup or brown sugar to the sauce for a sweet BBQ kick.

Cheese Substitutions: Shredded mozzarella, cheddar, or Monterey Jack are great alternatives if you don’t have cheese curds.
