Description
A flavorful Citrus Herb Turkey infused with the vibrant tastes of citrus and aromatic herbs, creating a juicy, tender, and perfectly roasted centerpiece for any holiday or special occasion.
Ingredients
1 whole turkey (12–14 pounds)
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 lemons, zested and juiced
2 oranges, zested and juiced
4 sprigs fresh rosemary
4 sprigs fresh thyme
4 sprigs fresh sage
6 cloves garlic, minced
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth (for basting)
Olive oil (for drizzling)
Instructions
- If using a frozen turkey, make sure to thaw it in the refrigerator for 2-3 days before cooking.
- Combine softened butter, lemon zest and juice, orange zest and juice, garlic, rosemary, thyme, and sage in a bowl to create an herb butter mixture.
- Pat the turkey dry and season the inside and outside with salt and pepper.
- Separate the skin from the turkey breast and spread half of the herb butter underneath the skin. Rub the remaining butter over the outside of the turkey.
- Optionally, brine the turkey overnight for enhanced moisture and flavor.
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Place the turkey in a roasting pan with the chicken broth in the bottom of the pan.
- Cover the turkey loosely with foil and roast for 1.5 hours.
- Baste the turkey every 30 minutes with the broth in the pan. Remove the foil in the last 30-45 minutes to allow the skin to crisp up.
- Check the turkey’s internal temperature. When it reaches 165°F (74°C) in the breast and thigh, it is done.
- Let the turkey rest for 20 minutes before carving to allow the juices to redistribute.
- Garnish with fresh herbs and citrus slices and serve.
Notes
Brining is optional but recommended for enhanced flavor and moisture.
Feel free to adjust herbs and citrus based on personal taste. Grapefruit or lime can be used for a unique twist.
If you prefer a spicier turkey, add a dash of red pepper flakes to the herb butter.
For a vegetarian alternative, consider making a herb-stuffed roast with the same citrus and herb flavors.
