Ingredients
For the Smashed Sweet Potatoes:
600g sweet potatoes
2 ½ tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp cornstarch
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tsp sriracha (optional for heat)
½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
½ – 1 tsp flaked sea salt (to taste)
1 tsp honey
For the Garlic Yoghurt Sauce:
¼ cup / 90g thick Greek-style yoghurt
Salt and pepper to taste
½ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely chopped garlic (depending on your preference)
Instructions
-
Prep the Sweet Potatoes:
Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 3cm thick slices. Boil them with a pinch of salt until easily pierced with a knife (5-8 minutes).
-
Make the Cornstarch and Oil Mixture:
In a bowl, combine olive oil, cornstarch, garlic powder, sriracha, black pepper, and flaked sea salt (except for honey).
-
Smash the Sweet Potatoes:
Place the boiled sweet potato slices in a single layer on a baking tray. Place a small square of baking paper on each slice and smash with a glass until they’re just under 1cm thick.
-
Coat with the Cornstarch and Oil Mixture:
Brush the cornstarch and oil mixture on one side of the smashed sweet potatoes, then flip and repeat on the other side.
-
Cook the Sweet Potatoes:
Preheat the oven or air fryer to 180°C (350°F). Bake for 30-40 minutes, flipping halfway through until crispy and golden brown.
-
Make the Garlic Yoghurt Sauce:
Mix Greek yoghurt with salt and pepper. Add garlic powder or finely chopped garlic to taste.
-
Drizzle with Honey:
Once the sweet potatoes are almost done, drizzle honey over them and bake for another few minutes to caramelize the honey.
-
Serve:
Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven or air fryer. Season with extra salt and pepper and serve with garlic yoghurt dipping sauce.
Notes
Crispiness: Olive oil and cornstarch are key to achieving that perfectly crispy texture.
Honey Variation: You can replace the honey with maple syrup or skip it for a more savory flavor.
Air Fryer Option: These sweet potatoes cook wonderfully in the air fryer—just set it to 180°C (350°F) and cook for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
