Description

A delicious and comforting French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole, perfect for a family dinner or a cozy gathering. It combines seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, rice, and a cheesy topping to create a one-pot meal everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil (or butter)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or Gruyère for a French onion twist)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, until caramelized. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up as it cooks (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat and stir in minced garlic. Cook for an additional 1 minute.
  3. Add the caramelized onions, uncooked rice, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir everything well.
  4. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes, until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the casserole.
  6. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.
  7. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of color and serve!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use Gruyère cheese instead of mozzarella.
  • This casserole can be prepared in advance and reheated for a quick meal.
  • You can customize the recipe by adding mushrooms or bell peppers.
  • For a gluten-free option, ensure the Worcestershire sauce used is free from gluten.
