Description

Homemade Angel Biscuits are light, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or as a side dish at dinner. This recipe is easy to make and yields tender biscuits with a golden brown top.

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour (preferably White Lily flour)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, chopped
  • 1 cup buttermilk, cold
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in the chopped butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir just until combined; do not overmix. The dough will be soft and slightly sticky.
  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough over onto itself 2-3 times to create layers, then pat out again to about 1-inch thickness.
  7. Use a floured biscuit cutter (about 2.5-inch diameter) to cut biscuits and place them close together on the prepared baking sheet for fluffy sides. Gather scraps, gently re-pat, and cut more biscuits.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  9. Remove from oven and brush warm biscuits with melted butter if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For flakier layers, ensure the butter remains cold throughout the process.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • You can customize the flavor by adding a pinch of cinnamon or herbs like rosemary.
