Description

This Irish soda bread with caraway seeds is a classic no-yeast bread that’s quick to make and full of flavor. The combination of sweet raisins and aromatic caraway seeds creates a unique taste, while buttermilk and sour cream ensure a tender crumb. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or teatime, this easy homemade bread pairs beautifully with butter or jam.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus 1 tbsp reserved)
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp caraway seeds
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup sour cream

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cast iron skillet or baking pan.

2️⃣ Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour (reserving 1 tbsp), sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, raisins, and caraway seeds.

3️⃣ Whisk wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and sour cream.

4️⃣ Combine & knead: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just moistened. Knead 10-12 times (dough will be sticky).

5️⃣ Shape & score: Transfer dough to the prepared skillet/pan, pat it down, and cut a 4-inch long, ¾-inch deep slit on top. Dust with the reserved flour.

6️⃣ Bake for 65-75 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

7️⃣ Cool & serve: Let the bread cool slightly before transferring it to a wire rack. Slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • Nutty Crunch – Add chopped walnuts or pecans.
  • Zesty Twist – Stir in orange or lemon zest.
  • Less Sweet – Reduce sugar for a more savory version.
  • Whole Wheat Version – Swap half the flour with whole wheat flour.
  • Spiced Flavor – Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
