Description
A delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, this Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli combines savory beef, sautéed peppers and onions, and melted cheese wrapped in pizza dough for a hearty and satisfying dish.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef or ribeye steak, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup provolone cheese, shredded
1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 package pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Optional: sliced hot peppers for added heat
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef (or ribeye steak) to the skillet. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Break it up with a spatula as you cook.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix well and cook for another minute, then remove from heat.
- Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the meat mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about an inch border around the edges.
- Sprinkle both provolone and mozzarella cheese over the meat mixture. If desired, add sliced hot peppers for extra flavor.
- Starting from one of the long sides, carefully roll the dough up tightly into a log shape. Pinch the edges to seal and tuck in the ends.
- Place the stromboli seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with the beaten egg to give it a golden finish.
- Using a sharp knife, make a few diagonal slits on top of the stromboli to allow steam to escape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the stromboli is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For added flavor, you can sauté mushrooms with the onions and peppers.
If you prefer a spicier version, add sliced jalapeños or hot banana peppers inside the stromboli.
To make this dish lighter, consider using shredded cooked chicken instead of beef or ribeye steak.
To store leftovers, place them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
If freezing, wrap the stromboli tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen for 25-30 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
