Description

These homemade soft flour tortillas are perfect for tacos, burritos, wraps, and more. Made with just a few simple ingredients, they are soft, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling

1 ½ tsp fine sea salt

1 tsp baking powder

5 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened

1 cup hot water (add more if needed to form dough)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add the softened butter to the flour mixture and work it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  3. Slowly pour in the hot water, a little at a time, while mixing with your hands. Continue adding water and mixing until a sticky dough ball forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a clean surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth, soft, and elastic.
  5. Lightly oil a baking sheet and a sheet of plastic wrap. Divide the dough into golf-ball-sized portions and place on the baking sheet. Cover with oiled plastic wrap and let rest for 20–30 minutes.
  6. Preheat a 12” non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until very hot (about 500°F).
  7. Lightly flour your work surface. Flatten one dough ball with your hands, then roll it out to about 10 inches in diameter.
  8. Place the rolled dough onto the hot pan and cook for 20–30 seconds per side until bubbles form and golden spots appear. Flip and cook the other side briefly.
  9. Stack the warm tortillas and wrap them in a clean kitchen towel to keep them soft. Once cooled, store in a zip-top bag to prevent them from drying out.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend.

Add herbs like cilantro, garlic powder, or a touch of honey for a flavor variation.

Adjust the size of the dough balls for larger or smaller tortillas.
