Description

Sorrel Drink Hibiscus Citrus is a refreshing, tangy-sweet beverage with hibiscus petals, citrus, and warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Ideal for summer BBQs or festive gatherings, this vibrant drink is both vegan and gluten-free.


Ingredients

2 cups dried hibiscus petals

1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and sliced

10 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

6 allspice berries (optional)

1 orange, sliced

1 lemon, sliced

1 1/2 to 2 cups granulated sugar (or to taste)

8 cups water


Instructions

  1. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan.
  2. Add the dried hibiscus petals, sliced ginger, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and allspice berries (if using). Stir to combine.
  3. Remove from heat, add the sliced orange and lemon. Cover and steep for at least 2 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator for a more intense flavor.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher, discarding the solids.
  5. Stir in the granulated sugar until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed.
  6. Refrigerate until very cold. Serve over ice, garnished with additional citrus slices.

Notes

Add sparkling water or soda water for a fizzy twist.

For an alcoholic version, add a splash of rum for a celebratory drink.

Substitute granulated sugar with honey, agave syrup, or your preferred sweetener.

Add fresh mint or basil for an herbal note.
