Description
Sorrel Drink Hibiscus Citrus is a refreshing, tangy-sweet beverage with hibiscus petals, citrus, and warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Ideal for summer BBQs or festive gatherings, this vibrant drink is both vegan and gluten-free.
Ingredients
2 cups dried hibiscus petals
1/2 cup fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
10 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
6 allspice berries (optional)
1 orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
1 1/2 to 2 cups granulated sugar (or to taste)
8 cups water
Instructions
- Bring 8 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan.
- Add the dried hibiscus petals, sliced ginger, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and allspice berries (if using). Stir to combine.
- Remove from heat, add the sliced orange and lemon. Cover and steep for at least 2 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator for a more intense flavor.
- Strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher, discarding the solids.
- Stir in the granulated sugar until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed.
- Refrigerate until very cold. Serve over ice, garnished with additional citrus slices.
Notes
Add sparkling water or soda water for a fizzy twist.
For an alcoholic version, add a splash of rum for a celebratory drink.
Substitute granulated sugar with honey, agave syrup, or your preferred sweetener.
Add fresh mint or basil for an herbal note.
