Description

Southern Fried Apples are a warm and comforting dessert or side dish, made of tender cooked apples coated in a buttery cinnamon-sugar glaze.

Ingredients

  • 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced apples to the skillet and cook for a few minutes until they begin to soften.
  4. Sprinkle the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg (if using), and a pinch of salt over the apples.
  5. Stir everything together and cook for an additional 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Serve warm as a dessert or side dish.

Notes

  • Best served with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a dessert option.
  • This dish can also complement savory meals like pork chops.
  • Granny Smith apples are recommended, but other firm apples can also be used.
