Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium white onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, finely diced
- 500g ground beef (12% fat)
- 1 tablespoon tomato puree
- 500g tomato purée
- 240ml beef stock
- ½ tablespoon soy sauce
- ½ bunch fresh basil, chopped
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon sugar
- 20g freshly grated parmesan
- 6 crusty white rolls
- 100g butter, melted
- 30g parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, finely grated
- 200g shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the tomato puree and tomato purée. Add the beef stock and soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Add the fresh basil, dried oregano, and sugar, and stir to combine. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Stir in the freshly grated parmesan cheese and set aside.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Cut the tops off the crusty white rolls and hollow out the insides, leaving a shell.
- Mix the melted butter, parmesan cheese, fresh parsley, and finely grated garlic in a small bowl.
- Brush the butter mixture generously on the inside of each bread bowl.
- Place the bread bowls on a baking sheet and sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese inside each bowl.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Spoon the meat sauce into the bread bowls, filling each one with the delicious sauce. Serve warm, garnished with extra parmesan or fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
- Use crusty rolls for best results, as they will hold their shape better during baking.
- The meat sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- You can substitute beef stock with chicken or vegetable stock if needed.
