Description

A quick and comforting Subway Meatball Sub copycat made with soft sub rolls, juicy meatballs, rich marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese, baked until warm and bubbly for the perfect homemade sandwich.

Ingredients

1 cup marinara sauce (or as needed)

810 cooked meatballs

2 (8-inch) sub buns

4 slices mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a small baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. If desired, mix the cooked meatballs with some of the marinara sauce in a small bowl for extra flavor.
  3. Spread marinara sauce evenly on the bottom half of each bun.
  4. Divide the meatballs evenly between the two buns and place them over the sauce.
  5. Top each sandwich with 2 slices of mozzarella cheese.
  6. Place the assembled sandwiches on the prepared baking sheet and bake for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Remove from the oven and serve warm.

Notes

You can use frozen meatballs; thaw overnight in the refrigerator and heat before assembling.

Lightly toast the buns before assembling for added texture and to prevent sogginess.

Add Parmesan cheese, provolone, Italian seasoning, or red pepper flakes for extra flavor.

Store leftover meatballs and sauce separately from the bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat meatballs and sauce before assembling with fresh bread and cheese for best results.

Avoid freezing fully assembled sandwiches as the bread may become soggy when reheated.
