Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring a rich, savory beef mixture piled onto buttery, crispy Texas toast. Perfect for a casual meal or a family dinner.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 cup diced onion

1 cup diced bell pepper

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon mustard

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices of Texas toast

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Butter for spreading on toast

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  2. Stir in the diced onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine well.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. Butter the Texas toast on one side and toast in a skillet or under a broiler until golden brown.
  6. Spoon the meat mixture generously onto one slice of toasted Texas toast. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top, if desired.
  7. Place another slice of toasted Texas toast on top, buttered side up.
  8. Cut the sandwiches in half and serve warm.

Notes

For a spicy kick, add jalapeños, chili powder, or hot sauce to the meat mixture.

Use plant-based ground meat or lentils for a vegetarian option.

Try adding mushrooms or spinach to the filling for extra flavor and nutrition.

For a gluten-free version, substitute the Texas toast with gluten-free bread or buns.
