Ingredients
- 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries, rinsed
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp lemon extract
- Dumplings:
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2/3 cup milk
Instructions
- In a large, wide saucepan, combine the blackberries, water, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, and lemon extract.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, 1 tbsp sugar, baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, nutmeg, and milk until a soft dough forms.
- Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the simmering berry mixture.
- Cover the pan tightly with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes without removing the lid.
- Serve hot with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.

- Ensure the lid is not removed during the 15-minute simmering to allow the dumplings to cook properly.
- Adjust sugar levels to taste depending on the sweetness of the blackberries.
