1/2 tsp black pepper
1 large egg
1/2 tsp kosher salt
2 tablespoons water
2/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 (11 oz) log soft goat cheese
2 cups grapeseed, canola, or vegetable oil
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives
Instructions
- Set up a breading station with three bowls: one with flour and black pepper, one with whisked egg, salt, and water, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
- Roll goat cheese into about 24 small balls, roughly 1 tablespoon each.
- Coat each ball in flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat evenly with breadcrumbs.
- Place coated balls on a plate or baking sheet and freeze for 20 minutes until firm.
- Heat oil in a deep saucepan to 350°F.
- Fry poppers in small batches for 1–2 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Arrange on a serving platter, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with chives before serving.
Notes
Freeze before frying to help maintain shape.
Add herbs like thyme or rosemary to breadcrumbs for extra flavor.
Use hot honey for a sweet-spicy variation.
Reheat in oven or air fryer to retain crispiness.
Freeze breaded poppers ahead and fry directly from frozen.
Avoid overcrowding the pan when frying.
